The Morgan Gorge, Waitaha River, West Coast by Neil Silverwood

Neil Silverwood is a West Coast born and bred visual artist – and conservation photographer. Neil uses his images to promote the conservation of precious places, particularly on the West Coast, for example, the wild Waitaha River. He used his images to great effect to illustrate the high values of the Morgan Gorge, a stunning landscape seen by only a few trampers and even fewer intrepid kayakers. The gorge is home to whio or blue duck and would have lost the majority of its flow had a hydro electric run of river scheme been approved.

Neil’s photographs appeared in a NZ Geographic feature and the application to the Department of Conservation was subsequently declined by the Minister for the Environment, in August 2019.
